    Trade Show Booths

    Thursday, February 28, 2008, 04:44 PM [General]

In the early 1980s, I was with a pharmaceutical company as a medical representative.  A web site I looked over, reminded me of the country’s doctors heart association that held their conferences annually.   Our city was their chosen conference venue for two consecutive years.  Pharmaceutical companies would set up display booths in the hotel lobby where the conference takes place.  The conference lasts for about 3 to 4 days.  As I am home-based in the city, I always assisted and overlooked our company’s show booth set up, made by a contractor.  During those days there were no automated cutters and foldable easy to set up panels.  Carpentry, art and decors had to be done in the hotels’ basement parking.  The tedious part of it is the cutting and shaping of letters on Styrofoam.  Then again cutting of colored paper to be pasted or glued on those letter shapes.

Looking at web site that offers these trade show booths, it shows how much easier it is now to set them up.  It has so much of the basic needs and accessories for trade show booths. Pipe and drape were something that we have not used before and it’s amazing to find it available easy to set up!  Another item that we don’t really mind much then were table covers.  We just folded large pieces of cloth and used pins also in folds to make a design on the table skirt, like how some hotels cover and design wedding tables.  The table skirts and banners they offer relieves a lot of issues in positioning and repositioning while setting up the booth.  They have all types of banner stands and adjustable ones too!  To top it all they even have flooring, truss works, lighting, presentation tools and tents making their trade show booths adaptable to various sites.  Many of our show booths then end as scrap or useless for a different conference.  When having difficulties setting up a for a trade show, refer to this web site, it could even enhance your ideas to make it more attractive.

    Sunny and Sandy Beaches

    Tuesday, February 26, 2008, 01:08 PM [General]

Coming across some vacation spots online, I realized that it has been more than 8 years that I have not been to any beach resort!  I have been to swimming pool resorts but it’s not like sea water with the warmth of sandy beaches.  Maybe there was no opportunity or time.  Or, there were no funds available to finance such a relaxing week end vacation.  There are cheap holidays in several places, and I found a few of them online.  During the cold or winter season, it’s quite difficult to find cheap vacation packages.  Bargain holidays come in plenty specially when off season starts.  Some offer up to 40 percent discount off street prices!  For those who want to go to beach resorts out of the country, you can find online a number of good hotel accommodations and return flights in different places that are relatively cheap.  This would be ideal for those who plan a family holiday!

The accommodations they offer are from 3 to 5 star hotels in places like Cyprus, Greece, Gran Canaria, Spain, Cancun and the Dominican Republic.  For those who would suddenly find time for a vacation, the web site offers also last minute holiday deals!  Actually, there’s even no need to book separately accommodations and flights.  They have the all inclusive holidays package that takes care of all those.  In fact, for large groups or similar bookings and dates to common destinations, they even have chartered flights that offer full financial security to the passengers.  Corporate sponsored incentives or conferences will find this deal very appealing on cost concerns.  This cheap holiday vacation deals narrate to savings from expenses.  So, in planning for a holiday vacation in some beach resort, it would be wise to check these out online.

    Health Care for Self-Employed

    Sunday, February 24, 2008, 05:27 AM [General]

Before I reached the age of 40, I did not bother about health insurance or health maintenance.  Any costs for medicine or health care could still be sustained then, by the income of both my wife and I.  But when I was hospitalized in 1998 for more than two weeks, it was when I realized the importance of hospitalization or health insurance.  The amount was quite huge and had it not been for the benefit of health insurance given by my employer, I would have not afforded the bills.  Right now, I believe in self-employed health insurance because I have not been employed for more than a year right now.  I need it more now because I am in my early 50s.  Not all offers for self-employed health insurance are reasonable or the same.  You could compare them online as what I have done recently.  Some appear to be cheap but the benefits might not be enough.  Others have exorbitant premiums and, with that alone, you could get sick of it.

It is nice to check every now and then for other outfits, online, who might have something better to offer.  What is nice with health or hospitalization insurance is, it does not tie you up with the company for years paying the premium.  It is at the option for those under self-employed health insurance to renew the policy every year.  This is an advantage for a self-employed if not satisfied with the services of the insurer.  A web site I came across online provides so many options before you sign up.  It offers a wide selection, probably the largest, of plans.  They even do not collect personal information!  How’s that for security?  The outfit, however, offers this only for those who work and live in the New York counties.   It depends, though, on the insurance carrier.  Some of their carriers might be able to provide the same service outside the New York area.  This is one web site that should be considered when looking for self-employed health insurance.

    Using a Sewing Machine

    Friday, February 22, 2008, 04:23 PM [General]

Among the things I love to do is fixing those that need repair and one of them is hand sewing.  I am a male and quite good at hand sewing.  When there is thick leather that needs sewing, I have even made my own needles for that purpose.  What I used are umbrella wire ends that have a hole in it.  I flattened one and sharpened one side, just like a knife, so it could cut through leather without needing to punch a hole first.  What I do not know how to use is a sewing machine.  My mom used to have that old Singer sewing machine that has a pedal.  I have poor hand and foot coordination to make it run.  Even when my mom attached an electric motor so it will be like an accelerator pedal to operate it.

In the past several years, I’ve seen handheld battery-operated sewing machines being peddled on the streets.  Many friends have tried them but all said that it did not last long and some even said it doesn’t work properly.  I wondered if Singer sewing machine had one of those handheld things.  On a web site that deals on appliances with different brands,  it gave me a grin when I saw this handheld Singer sewing machine.  There was only one review to it but an unfavorable one.  Well, anyway, scrolling down the homepage, it amazed me to find so many models of Singer sewing machine.  There are even computerized ones!  Some could do several types of stitches!   There’s one odd-looking, really distinct from the others, and I read the product details but I could not get on how it works.  I only understood that it could sew on buttons.

Being in my early 50s, I will no longer have the time or opportunity to learn how to use sewing machines.  Maybe, I will be contented in just watching people who know how to use them.  Singer sewing machine is one of the earliest, if not the earliest, brand of sewing machine.  For those enjoying using sewing machines, the web site is a great place to look up in case an ‘upgrade’ is necessary.
